Using layers of colorful paint, texture and mark making to create a feeling of tension, movement light and place and a freedom of expression, the abstract paintings I create are primarily in acrylic, but I also use oil, cold wax, and mixed media, collage, crayon, pastel, pencil and assemblage
My landscape paintings are of various mediums; watercolor, acrylic, oil, colored pencil and mixed media determined by the style and subject matter, as well as, if the piece was made in a plein air, or studio location. Plein air means painting outdoors, from life rather than a photograph in a studio.
I love still life paintings. It is like a window into a place or someones private collection of keepsakes. A still life can include a vase with flowers or just an arrangement of objects that are related or not. A still life can have a message or just be a view of things and junk. One man's junk is another man's treasure.
I use various mediums for my botanical art and botanical illustration Including watercolor, graphite, pen and ink, and colored pencil, as well as mixed media, and acrylic and oil. Botanical illustration is a technical and accurate rendering of the subject, whereas botanical art is an image that shows the artists hand and can be more expressive and less representational of the actual botanical specimen.
When creating collage pieces I use what ever interesting materials, media, images, textures, and colors that I collect. These materials are combined and applied to a surface in a way that will create an expression or feeling of place, mood, or nostalgia, or even humor.
